Why is web accessibilty important?

What is web accessibility? According to the Web Accessibility Initiative, “web accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the Web. More specifically, Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web. Web accessibility also benefits others, including older people with changing abilities due to aging.”.

So why is this important for your business?
The Web is an increasingly important resource in many aspects of life: education, employment, government, commerce, health care, recreation, and more. The Web is used for receiving information as well as providing information and interacting with society. Therefore it is essential that the Web be accessible in order to provide equal access and equal opportunity to people with disabilities.

Internet users vary in ways both expected and unexpected. Some differences that are more commonly thought of are language, gender, age, cultures, preferences, and interests. Some other differences that need to be addressed during the development process include skills, ability levels, and constraints under which users may be operating. This is particularly true for users within the trucking industry who carry a diverse range of skill-sets and abilities. Designing for diversity not only increases the number of people able to access your website, but also increases their level of involvement with it. Barrier-free design is beneficial for all users.
